The opening of the much-anticipated Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa is officially upon us and we couldn’t be more thrilled. Orms Print Room & Framing had the opportunity to visit the gallery before the public opening earlier today to give you an exclusive look at the largest collection of contemporary art in Africa, all housed under the incredible roof of Cape Town’s historic grain building in the silo district.
The museum is one of groundbreaking stature for not only Cape Town, but Africa as a whole, being our very own equivalent of the London’s Tate Modern and New York’s MoMa. The Zeitz MOCAA was established as a non-profit partnership between the V&A Waterfront and Jochen Zeitz, former CEO of Puma, in 2013. The silo district had for years been recognized as one of great significance but it wasn’t until Thomas Heatherwick, Jochen Zeitz and Mark Coetzee were introduced to the historic landmark that it was decided that it would be used for something of civil significance. At the time, Jochen Zeitz and Mark Coetzee were working together to build a ‘world-class collection of contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora’ on the African continent itself. The Zeitz MOCAA as well as the Silo Hotel, both housed in the grain silo building, was designed by Thomas Heatherwick, founder and principal of Londen-based ‘Heatherwick Studio’.
Guests can expect to see various forms of artwork from photography to installations, as well as permanent shows and a large amount of the works were produced by our very own team at Orms Print Room & Framing. Traveling exhibitions will also be on display throughout the year. However, the focus is of course on contemporary African art and artists showcasing include the likes of Zanele Muholi, Mohau Modisakeng, Andrew Putter, Jody Paulsen, Edson Chagas, William Kentridge, Nicholas Hlobo, Penny Siopsis, Wangechi Mutu and Rashid Johnson.

The Zeitz foundation aims to advance, promote and preserve African arts and culture, provide public and economically viable access to a core collection of art, operate appropriate school programmes to enrich and inspire, and most importantly to tell Africa’s story through art and culture, on African land.

We are incredibly proud to have been involved in this exceptional endeavor and it’s definitely something to see for yourselves. The Grand Public Opening Weekend will take place from 22 to 25 September 2017 and will offer free entry for everyone. Tickets are available at webtickets. Following that, the Zeitz MOCAA will be open from Wednesday to Monday between 10am – 6pm. “Late Night Friday” tickets are half price on the first Friday of every month and free for South African citizens every Wednesday between 10am and 1pm.
