Three South African photographers wonย accoladesย at the 2011 World Press Photo Awards. It’s amazing to see our country’s photographers doing so well on the international stage, walking away with first prizes in each respective category, as well as the biggest prize of the lot.

Jodi Bieber won first prize in the Portraits category, as well as the over-all grand prize of World Press Photo of the Year 2010. Bieber’s winning entry was her famous portrait of Bibi Aisha, disfigured for fleeing her husband, which was also the cover of Time Magazine last year.

Thomas P. Peschak also stepped up to first place in the Nature category with his picture of a Cape Gannet coming in to land at its nest on Malgas Island.

Another South African first prize winner, this time in the Sports category, was Mike Hutchings. His winning image of Demy de Zeeuw being accidentally kicked by Martin Caceres during the World Cup semifinal in Cape Town last year was timed to perfection.

Well done to Bieber, Peschak and Hutchings!
