Orms Staff Interview: Meet Christelle Troskie, one of your super talented designers here at Orms.

If you’ve been to Orms you’re probably familiar with many of the faces in the store and in the Print Room. However behind the scenes, there are loads of people who each play their part, be it carefully sanding your hand-made custom frame, binding your photo books or updating the website. So with that in mind, meet Christelle! Christelle is one of our uber talented designers and a very important part of the Orms Marketing team.

Hi Christelle! Please tell us a little about yourself?

My name is Christelle Troskie, I’m from Rustenburg in The North West Province. I am 22 years old (Yes, I am the youngest in the Company at the moment). I moved to Pretoria at the age of 18 to Study at Vega School of Photography. After I got my diploma I worked for a printing company in Pretoria, in August 2015 I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to move down to Cape Town and join the team at Orms.

Tell us a bit more about what you do here at Orms and what is it you enjoy about it?

I am one of the Designers in our Marketing team here at Orms. My role includes everything from designing newsletters, commercial photography to campaigns involving the launch of new products. I think what I enjoy the most about being part of the Marketing team is that I get the opportunity to be creative and innovative.  No idea is too big or too small – the sky is the limit. Orms gives me the opportunity to be the best designer I can be.

Who or what got you interested in photography and design?

I discovered my love for photography when I was 17 and joined the Future Photographerz program for 2 years before I started at Vega School of Photography. During my studies at Vega, I stayed with my best friend who was studying design at the time, we learned a lot from each other. While I motivated her with her designs, she motivated me in my photography. Today she is a full-time photographer, and I do photography as well as design.

If you didn’t pursue photography, what else would you have liked to do?

This is a tricky question because I love what I do! That said, I would have loved to be a Professional Wakeboarder, wakeboarding use to be a massive passion of mine when I was younger. Another dream I would have loved to pursue is Winemaking.

What’s your favourite song at the moment?

21 Pilots – Stressed Out

Chore you absolutely hate doing?

I can’t say I’m a fan of anything that falls under the “chore” category.

If you had to work on only one project for the next year, what would it be?

From personal experience I know how difficult it is to exhibit your work, especially if you aren’t an established artist. Because of that, I developed a passion to one day own a gallery specifically focused on upcoming artists. So you can imagine my excitement when Orms launched the upcoming SPACE Open Exhibition where everyone has an opportunity to exhibit their work. If I was given the opportunity, I would love to work on this project for a year.

If you could choose to stay a certain age, what age would it be?

I’d have to say I’d like a 22-year-old body, with a 50-year-old mind.

Your favourite food as a child?

Definitely 2min noodles.

Something you’ve learned in the last week?

Never underestimate the power of the mind.

If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you meet?

Easy, Ellen Degeneres.

What was the first thing you bought with your own money?

Well, when I was at school I worked part-time to buy my own Camera. In the end, that didn’t work out as planned and my parents decided to help me to buy the camera. So I guess the first thing I bought with my own money was two Art Deco chairs!

Where do you want to be in 5 years?

To be honest, I really enjoy what I do now. I love my job and at this point, I think the goal is to just become better, a better designer, a better photographer and a better person. As they say, the day you stop growing you might as well give up.
