Matthew Gore has created a simple and very easy to follow video explaining how the focal plane shutters of SLRs and DSLRs work, and what effects they have on the sync speed of speedlights and strobes. The video itself leans more towards the informative side than it does to the entertaining side, but the information should be very interesting to new photographers and DSLR users.

Once you understand how the shutter influences the lighting from strobes, you can manipulate it. For example, if you only need the bottom frame of your photograph illuminated, you can shoot at a shutter speed faster than the sync speed, offering you more control over the exposure from ambient light (you might need to turn your camera upside down for this to work!).

Let us know if you enjoyed the more technical video, and we’ll be sure to share more in the future!
