In this quick tutorial, Manni will teach you how to use layer masks in Adobe Photoshop.

Article and video tutorial created by Manfred Werner, a Cape Town-based photographer and founder of RetutPro.

In this week’s Photoshop tutorial; Masks are simple pixel areas that can be visible or hidden in layers. For example; if you’ve applied a layer with a specific effect and you either want to reduce that effect or only reveal a certain part of the layer, applying a mask makes this possible. There are many techniques using tools to create effects before or after applying a mask. Two simple ways to use masks:

– Applying a mask keeps the effect visible and areas can be brushed out.
– Inverting the mask hides the effect and areas can be brushed in.
