"This little creek is characterized by shale bedrock, its dark grey colour particularly striking when wet. During one amble down the creek I began to notice a number of rocks that were distinctly different to the shale. After a bit of light reading on the geology of the area I've come to the conclusion that this subject is a piece of "concretion" - a mass of carbonate rock that formed in shale but under unique chemical processes initiated by a nucleus of organic material, like a dead fish, with a pH different to the surrounding mud.
When I took the image I was concentrating on the shape and colour of the rock set against the stream flowing over dark shale. On further reflection I enjoy the juxtaposition between the current flowing water and the striations in the rock suggesting an ancient geological process that involved water."
