The Tamron 20-40mm F/2.8 Di III VXD for Sony E is a fast ultra-wide-angle to standard zoom lens with a constant F2.8 aperture throughout the focal range. This incredibly versatile lens is well-suited to landscape, street and portrait photography.

Tamron designed the lens to make travelling a little lighter. Instead of travelling around with tonnes of gear for different shooting conditions, you can now enjoy the spoils of having an ultra-wide angle lens and standard zoom lens in one, saving you both space and time when you’re out shooting.

The lens has a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture, making it excellent for shooting in difficult lighting conditions. When shooting at the 20mm focal length, the minimum focusing distance is 17cm and a maximum magnification of 1:3.8. At the 40mm focal length, the minimum focusing distance is 29cm, with a maximum magnification of 1:5.1.

Made for full-frame and APS-C Sony cameras, the Tamron 20-40mm incorporates a VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear autofocus motor, delivering fast, precise and quiet autofocus performance. It also supports Sony’s Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF features. When switching between autofocus and manual focus, photographers must do so within the camera’s menu system, as the lens lacks a physical AF/MF switch. Another thing to note is that the lens is not parfocal, which means that the lens loses focus as you zoom in and out.

While the Tamron 20-40mm image quality is excellent, and the lens delivers super sharp photos, photographers will likely experience some vignetting and barrel and pin-cushion distortion.

The rapid zoom ring arc of 65° enables quick adjustment to your desired focal length with minimal movement. Photographers need to consider movement when shooting with the Tamron 20-40mm lens as the lens features no optical image stabilisation. However, most Sony cameras today come with built-in In-Body Image Stabilisation, so you might not even notice it.

One of the standout features of the Tamron lens is its excellent bokeh performance. Tamron has incorporated a nine-bladed aperture to perfectly isolate your subject from its background, delivering ultra-smooth bokeh effects.

Its moisture-resistant construction and fluorine coating on the front lens element provides excellent protection against rain, dust, dirt and more. It also features a waterproof USB-C Connector Port that allows you to update and customise your lens using the Tamron Lens Utility software.
