Calling all South African news photographers! Submit your photos to be included in the upcoming UnPublished exhibition!
UnPublished is an upcoming exhibition organised by multimedia journalist Aletta Gardner, featuring news photographs that were, for one reason or another, never published or used.
We love the concept behind the show, so we’ve gotten involved in the project and we can’t wait to see the final exhibition! Mike Ormrod will be serving as one of the three judges curating the exhibition, while Orms Print Room & Framing will be printing and framing the works.

Calling all South African news photographers!
Out of the hundreds of pictures photojournalists file for a particular story, editors are often forced to choose just one. This decision is influenced by several factors – the prominence of certain newsmakers, how relevant the image is to the main angle of the story or simply what space is available… Consequently many photos, although beautiful or striking in their own right, languish on hard drives, forgotten.
Sometimes, though, a particular image refuses to fade from a photographer’s memory. These photographs tell the stories behind the headlines and offer an insight into the lives of the ‘ordinary’ people and places behind extraordinary events, that sometimes go unnoticed by the mainstream media.

Where
The exhibition will take place at Young Blood Gallery (Bree Street in Cape Town).
The show opens on 4 September 2014 and will run for one month.Printing & Framing
Orms, EWN and Cape Talk have generously agreed to help support & facilitate printing and framing in order to minimise expenses as much as possible. Photographers whose work is selected to appear in the exhibition will be requested to pay R500 for their image (roughly between A1 and A2 in size) to be printed and professionally framed at Orms Print Room & Framing. Photographers will get to keep the framed print after the exhibition.
Curation
Curation will be facilitated by a panel of three judges: Award winning Sunday Times photojournalist James Oatway, Orms owner Mike Ormrod and acclaimed photographer and Go! Magazine photo editor Samantha Reinders. The panel will select a maximum of 25 images (no more than one image per photographer).
Submissions
To qualify you need to be a South African photojournalist working full-time, part-time or freelance for a newspaper, agency or online news publication.
Please send a low-res version of the pictures you would like to submit (maximum 5) to unpublished.photo@gmail.com, along with a short description of when and where it was taken to give context. If you know the reason(s) why it was not originally published please include this.
Deadline
The deadline for submission is 17 July 2014 and all photographers who are selected will be notified by 31 July.
