Here’s one for the strobist and studio lighting fans out there: a video comparing 150 year old flash powder “technology” with a modern speedlight. Before electronic strobes, photographers used flash-bulbs (like the ones you’d see in a turn-of-the-century film). But before flash-bulbs, they had to make do with raw flash powder, which creates quite a lot of smoke, never-mind sparks. Really makes one thankful for the convenience of modern technology!

The most surprising thing we learned from the video is how bright the flash powder is… Matching or succeeding the output of a modern speedlight at 1/1 power!
