Museum Gallery, situated at the Upper East Side hotel in Woodstock, is currently showing their first seasonal exhibition. The Autumn Show MMXI features works by six fresh South African photographers, including two of our featured pros:
Dylan Culhane
Sean Metelerkamp
Bridget de Gersigny
Kali van der Merwe
Les Goodman
Greg Beadle
“The work ranges from the delicate lithographic handprints of Bridget de Gersigny, to Kali van der Merwe’s expressionistic, performance-oriented self-portraits, to Sean Metelerkamp’s surrealistically staged portraits of local artists and musicians. With nearly 80 photographic artworks on display across three levels of gallery space, our Autumn Show MMXI is guaranteed to include something for everyone, though we sincerely hope the cross-section of images will challenge some of our preconceptions about photography at the same time.”
Opened in late 2010, Museum Gallery is a new space for contemporary South African art photography. Owners and curators Dylan Culhane and Greg Beadle say: “the gallery aims to unearth emerging talent; seeking out bold, original artists engaged in lens-based media.”
“Every season Museum takes on a maximum of ten artists to fill the walls of our 3-level gallery space, promoting this work intensely over a 3 month period. Our criteria for taking on new artists is essentially an instinctual response to work that excites us, though the overarching criteria for this ethereal reaction might be classified as originality, technical excellence, visual potency, and innovative use of the photographic medium.”
The works on display are well worth a visit. Free parking is available within the hotel’s underground parking lot, so don’t let that hold you back from seeing these contemporary images.
