Great close-up portraits of various South African personalities, taken by local photographer Morne van Zyl.
These portraits are part of an ongoing close-ups project local photographer Morne van Zyl has been working on over the last few years. The photographs feature various South African personalities, from creatives to bloggers to musicians, all confronted with a camera and ring-flash combo right in their faces. We like Morne’s idea to ‘etch’ his name into the catchlights in the subject’s eyes by stencilling the ring-flash – see the reflection in the glasses in the last portrait below.
If you like these photographs, be sure to take a look at the close-ups gallery on Morne’s site, containing over 3 years worth of portraits!

Has the photographer not noticed the flat spot on every ones nose from touching the glass?
I think that was part of what he was going for… It’s one of those ridiculous things artists do just in order to be original. Even so, or perhaps because of it, I like this.
These are great but are quite similar to Martin Schoeller’s work.
Putting your name as photographer on a stencil over the ring-light. Quite a good way of making sure no one steals the artwork… (Visible in the reflection on the glasses of the last photo)
