Mike Ormrod and Jen Ferrini were fortunate enough to recently attend the Figures & Fictions – Contemporary South African Photography exhibition, which is currently on show at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. The exhibition focusses on the work of 17 South African photographers. All of the images on show are related to South Africa’s political and photographic past, and were taken between 2000 and 2010.
Figures & Fictions “features works by some of the most exciting and inventive photographers living and working in South Africa today. The exhibition presents the vibrant and sophisticated photographic culture that has emerged in post-apartheid South Africa. The works on display respond to the country’s powerful rethinking of issues of identity across race, gender, class and politics.” Visit the official site for more information.

I must admit that I’m not familiar with the work of many of these photographers but find Pieter Hugo’s photographs quite fascinating.

For me all the photographers are inspirational – but to choose one I choose Jodi Bieber who just like the late great Ken Oosterbroek who she was mentored by – her images are real and raw and like a good book – they live on…inspiring, creating awareness and touching people. Never mind the awards & accolades…her work and what she does with it…is simply inspiring…respect!
Pieter Hugo – Truth is nothing…what you believe to be true is everything.

Mikhael Subotzky – love his Beaufort-West series – saw it at C/O in Berlin last year.
I have to agree with Mike Barwood on this one. He took the words out my mouth. Jodi Bieber is definitely a story teller in her pictures. You are left wanting to know more and how the story ends. There are one or two I do not know so I am off to google now 🙂
It’s really hard choosing between them all as each artist is amazing in their own unique way, however Jodi Bieber hit me the most as people still don’t realize how beautiful and unique everyone is in their own way , no matter their race/weight/culture… and she catches this perfectly 🙂
