Spirit of a Nation by Josh Hayman is a beautiful video documenting the Nelson Mandela Memorial at Cape Town Stadium.
This beautiful video documenting the Nelson Mandela Memorial at the Cape Town Stadium on 11 December was filmed and edited by Capetonian videographer Josh Hayman.
Even if you followed the memorial on television, Josh’s Spirit of a Nation revisits the event from his perspective, and inspires a lot of positive emotion for our country and the accomplishments of our late Tata that allowed us to be who we are today.
The video was filmed using a Canon 5D Mark III and a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, with selected shots captured with a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L.
From the video’s description:
‘Tens of thousands of South African’s unite to honour a legend in the most befitting way possible.”
Having been a young boy at the time, my memories of Madiba leaving prison and going on to win our first democratic elections are quite vague. When I first heard news of his passing I knew I wanted something more personal to connect to in years to come as the ‘stock’ footage of his release, while iconic, does little to jog my memory of my experience at the time. Living only a few minutes away from Cape Town Stadium I decided to take a walk, camera in hand to pay tribute to ‘Tata’. Footage or no footage, it was a day I will not soon forget. Witnessing people of all walks of life uniting to celebrate the great man in typical South African fashion will live on with me for many many years to come.
