If you have a Canon EOS M camera or if you’ve been looking at buying one, you’ll probably know that while the image quality is superb, the autofocus is slightly on the slower side, despite the Hybrid CMOS sensor which features both contrast and phase detection autofocus modes.
However, Canon has not been resting, and they have announced an upcoming Version 2.0.2 firmware update for the camera that unlocks the potential of the hybrid sensor, and claims 2.3x faster autofocus performance. Luckily, Korean photographer Daero Lee has already got his hands on an EOS M loaded with the new speedy software, and he’s been able to confirm the improved AF speed.
The update should be available before the end of the month, so keep an eye on Canon’s website for the download link.
In Daero’s videos, you’ll notice that focus is locked in an instant with the new firmware, and the lens no longer appears to hunt for focus. Impressive stuff. Take a look:
