To accompany the launch of their brand new Nikon Z fc mirrorless camera, Nikon has released the NIKKOR Z 28mm f/2.8 (SE) lens, a special edition, lightweight, compact prime. This latest lens from Nikon is compatible with both the full-frame Nikon FX-format mirrorless cameras for which the Z mount has been adopted, and it also functions as a kit lens for the APS-C Nikon DX-format mirrorless camera, the Z fc.
As with the Nikon Z fc, this wide-angle prime inherits the same classic, beloved design as the NIKKOR lenses that came out in the era of the Nikon FM-2 SLR film camera. It reproduces many of the noteworthy designs of this iconic era, including the knurling and prominent control ring. This faithfulness to the film-esque look will offer Z fc users a cohesive old-school aesthetic when they pair the 28mm f/2.8 (SE) with their Z fc.
Coming in at only 43cm in length and a weight of roughly 160g, the NIKKOR Z 28mm f/2.8 (SE) is highly portable, complementing the compact size of mirrorless cameras. The 28mm fixed focal length provides a relatively versatile wide-angle field of view for capturing a variety of scenes, from cityscapes to landscapes.
f/2.8 is a reasonably wide maximum aperture, enabling the use of faster shutter speeds in low-light shooting conditions, thereby reducing the effects of camera shake. It also offers beautiful bokeh when fully open.
The lens features a great minimum focus distance of 0.19m (0.63 ft), allowing users to get close to their subjects and create really dynamic images. On the topic of focusing, this the first NIKKOR Z lens to boast the adoption of the multi-focusing system from Nikon’s S-Line. This means the lens realises minimal aberration when shooting at close distances, a smaller size, and fast, highly accurate autofocus. Finally, the use of a stepping motor (STM) enables quiet and precise autofocus control.
This prime isn’t just for shooting stills — with its super-quiet operation, smooth focus breathing, and stable exposure, it was also developed with video performance in mind.
In line with its traditional design, the lens features a control ring on its barrel. The control ring is programmable, and can have various functions such as aperture and exposure compensation assigned to it.
Lastly, the NIKKOR Z 28mm was designed with dust- and drip-resistant performance and a non-retracting mechanism so that users can confidently take the lens with them everywhere.
