I recently swung by the Brett Murray exhibition at the Goodman Gallery in Woodstock Cape Town that opened on 20 November. Like his previous work, Hail to the Thief continues Murray’s attack on the abuse of power we have become so familiar with in South Africa today. By using pop-inspired imagery and language, he cleverly disguises the true message of his work while simultaneously commenting on the cover-ups and deceit he believes his subjects are guilty of.
Murray ensures that his audience is engaged by using a multitude of mediums, including bronzes, etchings, paintings and silk-screens, to humorously expose the materialistic and self-serving nature of our current bureaucratic regime.
