Alex Jansen, a US Army Engineer Officer, has put together an extensive guide on stabilising your DSLR when shooting handheld.
Using the same principles as stabilising a rifle, Alex explains the four concepts of ‘steady position’, ‘trigger/shutter squeeze’, ‘aiming and sight picture’ and ‘breathing control’, or STAB for short – the military loves their acronyms.
The guide is very in-depth, spanning multiple pages (it even has a table of contents), but the advice will definitely come in handy when you’re in a situation requiring a steady shot and you don’t have a tripod with you – which happens more often than one expects!
