Orms Staff Interview: Meet Rita van der Walt, one of our creative framing consultants at Orms Print Room & Framing.
Wether you’re framing a priceless original artwork, a print, a certificate or even a jersey, our framing consultants at Orms Print Room & Framing will offer you expert advice, allowing you to present your work in the best way possible. Annelien Moerdijk sat down with Rita van der Walt, one of our framing specialists, to learn a bit more about her.
Hi Rita! How long have you been in the framing industry?
Since 1986, when I started my own gallery. I’ve always worked with a combination of art and creativity in many forms, and framing is an extention of that creativity.
Why did you join the Orms family?
Serendipity! I was at a stage in my life when I felt the need for change. After many
years of flying solo, I was open and ready for new experiences. It was by chance that I came across an ad for a specialist frame consultant at Orms. I was intrigued. The opportunity to work in a dynamic creative environment was a wonderful opportunity. I have had the privilege to meet some of the most wonderfully creative people in Cape Town and have been inspired to expand my own creativity through these encounters.
What’s the best advice you can give someone in terms of framing?
Simplicity. A frame should never overpower or interfere with the art.
And the most beautiful image or item you have ever framed?
I’ve framed countless exquisite art pieces (and the stories that inspired them). The most beautiful work always becomes the next and then the next… To name one is not possible.
The weirdest item I have ever had to frame though, was a two and a half meter Anaconda snake skin! It was the gentleman’s pet snake that died, and he had cured the skin himself!
It was quite impressive, although somewhat unusual!
Are there any works or items that can’t be framed?
Anything can be framed! Within reason of course. Alan, our gifted workshop manager, is a craftsman of note and he will always find a way of creating a frame, even for the most difficult object.
Where do you want to be in 5 years?
I am old enough and wise enough not to project too far ahead. I allow life to unfold
in ever surprising ways… Creative ways… Following the creative path where it leads…
And finally, please describe yourself in 5 words.
Inquisitive, creative, inspired, somewhat unconventional, stubborn.
Thanks for your time, Rita!
