Today we join photographer and YouTuber, Evan Ranft for a basic explanation of ND Filters and Polarizers.
This is basically all the beginner information needed to get started using these filters and improving your photography and video. Evan explains the use of each of these, how they work, situations they are ideal for, as well as when not to use them.
Now, as you’ll see by the end of this video, Evan is a fan and feels that it’s certainly worth owning these two types of filters. He isn’t wrong, but what we will say is that it also depends on your personal preference, what you shoot and your own style. When you are starting out in photography it’s easy to get stuck on what gear you need vs what’s a “nice to have”. If you are a keen landscape, wildlife or street photographer, you are more likely to find these filters of use. That said, to an extent, it is possible to recreate the filtered effect in post-production. So our advice would be to maybe hold off jumping into buying a bunch of filters, first see if you feel the investment will add to your work and then take it from there.
