You might need to rewatch it a few times to spot the moment that the lens gets stolen – it happens that quickly!
As a photographer, you’re probably very aware that your camera is a sought-after target for muggers or thieves, but the thought may not have crossed your mind that the lens itself is just as much of a target, and that it’s very easy to detach from the DSLR while you’re distracted. Of course, the real trick in the video is the confusion that the group of thieves created before, during and after the mugging, which meant that the lens was well out of reach by the time the tourists understood what had just happened.
While theft is not always avoidable, at least by witnessing this video we are aware of at least one more method that we need to be wary of. But more importantly, if you’re caught in a similar situation, rather keep safety in mind! Cameras and lenses can be replaced, lives can’t. Luckily the St. Petersburg tourists appear to have come away unharmed.
