The title of the exhibition alludes to the nature of the lens as an optical device that assists in capturing as well as casting an image. The exhibition will include works of diverse media where the lens is used as primary device for image production.
The aim of this exhibition is to combine a selection of older and more recent work produced by South African artists who apply the lens in their practice. The works do not only correlate aesthetically, but also connect in terms of the choice of subject matter. The focus of the exhibition will parallel certain modules taught in Visual Studies at Stellenbosch University, including the history of and discourse on the lens and the utopia/dystopia of photographic and video art in South Africa.
Location: Sasol Art Gallery, 52 Ryneveld Street, Stellenbosch
