Our designer, Riëtte, got to spend some time with the newly available Olloclip 3-in-1 iPhone lens system over the last week.

Weekend ma(ss)(dn)ess.

So I was away for a few days: Me, the iPhone 4s and its dear friend, the Olloclip 3-in-1 lens system. The weekend started off with a trip to Wynberg Civic Centre for the Adidas All Originals Live Performances event. The venue was quite small and not much was going on. A few people were hanging outside. A few were standing around the bar. About three people were on the floor, looking pretty awkward. Walking across the somewhat-lit floor, made us feel like teenagers again, walking across an awkward dance floor while the boys are on the one side and girls on the other. The lighting even took part – being pinkish red, accompanied by a boyish blue. Up on the ceiling were soft light box displays, each letter on its own box/cube and each box in line to spell either “clap”, “your”, “hands or “say”. Simple, yet effective.

First up were Beach Party. Crazy off beat surf rock and wacked style. They got the crowd going. [Have a look at their music video for “Water”, as featured on Orms Connect – Ed.] Next up were Spoek Mathambo with a mad crowd. They got a massive encore and huge applause. Finally, all I’ve been waiting for, with a chilled stroll onto the stage and lovely nerdy style…

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! This was their first time in South Africa. CYHSY started their band in 2004 and released their first album in 2005 with popular songs such as ‘The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth’ and ‘Over and Over Again’ and of course my favourite ‘Heavy Metal’. This album sold more than 125 000 copies without a label. Their second album titled Some Loud Thunder was released in 2007 with songs such as ‘Satan Said Dance’ and ‘Underwater’ and their third album, titled Hysterical, was only released late last year, 2011 with songs such as ‘Into Your Alien Arms’ and ‘Same Mistake’.

With a voice like Alec Ounsworth (also writing pretty much all the lyrics and music) one would think he can only do the “off”, pitchy vocals, but I got a surprise! What a good voice this guy has. Lee Sargent (keyboardist/guitarist/backup vocalist) looked so bored the whole time, I couldn’t stop wondering what he must be thinking. Robbie Guertin (keyboardist/guitarist/backup vocalist) started the first song off by looking like some random person not knowing where he was, with a nerdy but cute and very happy smile. Then he joined Sean Greenhalgh (drummer) and ripped out some percussion beats, followed by keyboarding all over the place. Tyler Sargent (bassist) looked only a little less bored than his brother. Nevertheless, these guys can make music and put a smile on a crowd’s face.

I got to take some photos of these bands with the Olloclip’s fisheye lens.

After the show, at 00:45 in the morning, we decided to head through to George for two days. Arriving in George at about 06:30, we managed to view the sunrise, making visible the craters in the clouds resembling something like the moon or Mars and I may add, a spaceship in the distance.

In George, some family time was valued and Kai (Alaskan Malamute) and the kids were some photograph subjects.

On the way back home, I finally managed to figure out that I had to turn the wide angle lens off completely to get to the macro… and what a revolution! I didn’t have much of a subject to photograph to show the capability of the wide angle lens, but got one shot that can give an idea.

These two examples show the details you can get with the normal camera on your iPhone 4s compared to the detail with the Olloclip macro lens.

Overall, the Olloclip is definitely recommended for getting some great photos. I’m even going to go ahead and say it’s really cool and fun to play around with. The only thing that might annoy one, is taking off your phone cover every time you use the Olloclip. Other than that, have fun with always having a camera and 3 lenses at your fingertips.

You can get the Olloclip 3-in-1 iPhone Lens System on Orms Direct.

  1. Ha! I was standing next to her at the concert, saw the strange bubble shape and  wondered what she was shooting with, this all makes sense now 🙂 Very cool results.
