Irving Penn was an American photographer known for his fashion, portraits and still life photography. As one of the most important editorial photographers of the mid-twentieth century, Penn was celebrated as one of Vogue magazine’s top photographers for more than sixty years.
At a time when photography was primarily understood as a means of communication, he approached photography with an artist’s eye and expanded the creative potential of the medium, both in his professional and personal work. He was also equally comfortable in both commercial work and fine art, Penn continued to develop and push the limits of portrait and still-life work until his death in 2009.
