Renowned for the dedication he devoted to each project and his uncompromising professional standards, Smith developed the photo essay into a sophisticated visual form. Perhaps best known for his vivid World War II photographs, contributions to LIFE magazine and the New York Times. He was a complex individual, but also one of the most prolific photographers ever leaving a legacy of hundreds of thousands of photos.
