Want to get started with macro photography? Thomas Shahan has you covered with some inspiring advice and methods.

Have you ever wanted to get into macro photography, but don’t know where to start? Thomas Shahan has created this great overview video of close-up photography, with some amazing imagery, solid advice and methods, and a generally inspiring tone.

Of course, being only 8 minutes long, it’s not the definitive resource on the topic, but visit his YouTube channel to view more helpful videos. Thomas’s websiteΒ and Flickr is also well worth a visit, showcasing his amazing macro photography.

If you don’t have any gear for macro photography, you’ll note that it really doesn’t take much in the way of equipment to get started, as Thomas demonstrates in the video. For example, at the very least you’ll be able to get macro shots with a set of extension tubes and some DIY light modifiers for your DSLR’s built-in flash. For a more advanced setup that will make shooting a bit easier, have a look at dedicated macro lenses and lighting.
