‘Friends50’, an exhibition at the South African National Gallery.

For 50 years, the Friends of Iziko South African National Gallery have acquired 300+ artworks for the national collection, funded education projects, helped conserve artworks, and hosted art engagement events for the public.

Orms Print Room & Framing recently had the honour of framing incredibly valuable works by Cecil Skotnes for the ‘Friends50’ exhibition hosted at the South African National Gallery in celebration of their 50 year anniversary.

The exhibition ‘Friends50’ is a curated selection of items taken from the more than 300 Friends supported acquisitions which have been purchased during the course of the past 50 years by the Friends on behalf of the National Gallery.

Since 1968, the Friends of Iziko South African National Gallery has supported the Gallery in its role as South Africa’s premier national art museum, through full-or-partial-funding of acquisitions, as well as a variety of educational and conservation initiatives.

In 1981, the Friends made the rather astute purchase of two etchings by the then relatively unknown William Kentridge. Originally part of the Friends Choice Collection, these were the first Kentridge’s to enter the Permanent Collection when they were accessioned by the Gallery in 1986.

‘Friends50’ is on exhibition until November 2018 so be sure to check it out!
